ADVOCACY is the deliberate process of influencing those who make policy decisions. Advocacy is a strategy that NCBW uses to complement efforts in:

  • Strengthening capacity for self-help.
  • Delivering relief in emergencies.
  • Addressing discrimination in all its forms.

Women Vote Early

NCBW works to increase the number of women voters through registration drives and education initiatives, placing a significant focus on voter registration and early voting. When women vote, our values and priorities are represented. Women Vote Early mobilizes Black women from over 20 organizations across Nashville fostering solidarity to encourage early voting and drive higher early voter turnout.

Women’s Policy Conference

NCBW Metro Nashville, in collaboration with NCBW statewide chapters, served as sponsor of the 5th Annual Statewide Women’s Policy Conference. The conference theme was “Changing the Present-Impacting the Future: Making It Happen Now!” The speakers focused on legislation that would impact women and children in three focus areas: Empowerment (economic self-sufficiency and political engagement), Health (Individual/Family wellness, creating safe, healthy communities, to include mental and elder health disparities along with reproductive health)and Justice (human trafficking, domestic violence and sexual harassment).

Annual Women’s History Month Restoration Clinic

NCBW Metro Nashville, in collaboration with the Middle Tennessee Urban League and Music City Links, co-hosted the annual Women’s History Month Restoration Clinic sponsored by RESTORE in partnership with Judge Rachel Bell, Criminal Court Clerk Howard Gentry, and Chief Public Defender, Martesha Johnson, on March 4, 2023, at the McGruder Center.

Legislative Day on the Hill

Statewide NCBW chapters Chattanooga, Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis hosted an in-person Day on the Hill at the State Capitol in Nashville, TN which included a legislative briefing session by members of the Tennessee Black Caucus followed by a panel discussion, a mock legislative session, and dialogue with legislative policy advisors and lobbyists. This event was held on March 15, 2023. Our theme was “ Equity in Literacy: Ensuring Every Third Grader in Tennessee Has Access to High-Quality Instruction and Support.”

Community Conversations: Policy, Perspective and Policing

In collaboration with the Napier-Looby Law Association and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, NCBW Metro Nashville engaged in an open and honest conversation about the historical and outright biases of policing in Black communities. On April 13, 2023, we assembled a panel at the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Headquarters to present and engage with the community to learn law enforcement perspectives, discuss alternatives to traditional policing, get answers to critical questions and ultimately make connections.
